No doubt, we all know about Web 2.0 more deeply from O’Reilly Media group. A conference was held by the group in 2004 about the understanding of web. According to the writer Tim O’Reilly it was “a brainstorming session between O’Reilly and Medialive International.” Its origin was not in 2004 by the conference of web 2.0 but the clear aspect about the web came from the conference. In the starting of what is Web 2.0 Tim O’Reilly writes, “The bursting of the dot-com bubble in the fall of 2001 marked a turning point for the web.” It means the discussion about web was started from 2001 and dot-com bursting was the turning point.

From the 1997 to 2004 Google was a dominant search engine in the industry of search engines. Before it Netscape which was the starter of web era was out of market. This was the situation to theories all the software, data and tools the web. In my point of view web 2.0 is nothing but theory of development in web which was started from search engine Yahoo and completed to Google in the major role.

Now, in which era we live, there are many contradictions between web 2.0, web 3.0, web 4.0, and web 5.0 and so on. But main contradiction is between web 2.0 and web 3.0. I will let you what people think about all these.

At 1st I should clear about web 2.0 from the example of Tim O’Reilly writing which was published in “what is web 2.0”:

Major differences of web 1.0 to 2.0 are:

Personal Web site – Blogging

Page Views – Cost Per Click

Publishing – Participation

CMS – Wikis

Directories – Tagging

Stickiness – Syndication

There are some more example has been produced by Tim O’Reilly but I have shown here only most important are.

With the example you can justify the differences between web 1.0 and web 2.0. I think quantitative changes of web 1.0 starts towards web 2.0 from the age of search engines but the qualitative changes comes in light in 2004 after the conference of web 2.0.

In the tag line of “what is web 2.0” Tim O’Reilly writes, “Design Patterns and Business Models for the Next Generation of Software” is web 2.0.

In my point of view web 2.0 development should be identified in two terms – Software development and “The Web as Platform” as per the Tim O’Reilly.

Software development was basic aspect and quantitative changes in the web which reach over the web 2.0.

Basically in software development was:

Blogging
APIs
RSS
XML
AJAX
Tagging

These are the major development of software which bring the theory of web 2.0 and on the basis of them a theory comes which was for web 2.0 and web as platform.

When we say web as platform it means people collaboration on the web. In this process blogging, tagging and APIs played a great role.

It was the theory of people participation on the web to create a new business model on the web. Adsense and Adwords is the major theory of this.

In my point of view web 2.0 essence was content. Technological development and all things were for better web. People collaboration with the information about the things by the web. So, the content became king for the entire web in the era of web 2.0 with the participation on web.

In this way RSS played great role in distribution of content. It was the qualitative changes from the hyper link to content distribution.

Now, the debate is not for web 2.0, debate is for web 3.0. I think still it is not the stage of web that we can say, we are in the era of web 3.0 but people don’t control themselves and give some examples of web 3.0:

Focused on the individual
lifestream
Consolidating dynamic content
The semantic web
Widget, drag, drop mashup
User Behavior, me-onomy
iGoogle, Netvibes
User engagement
Advertisement

But in my point of view it is not the stage which we can define that we are in the age of web 3.0. There are some solid reasons:

There are not any technological and software development like web 2.0

There is not a solid theory like web 2.0 which was “The Web as Platform”.

No site seems on the theory of web 3.0.

But I can say the quantitative changes for web 3.0 are continued. Web 3.0 will be for the web however you are the outside of web.

Through the mobile phones – blogging, RSS and all the news update is the symptoms of web 3.0 but we can’t give a theory on the basis of only one or two technological development. The development of technology and software will soon give the theory of web 3.0 front of us but still I am not agree that web 3.0 is our era.
