Recently, a news came in light about the keywords meta tag. Google announced that it doesn’t consider Meta tag keywords for web ranking. About the Meta tag keywords, Google has written an article on webmaster central blog. I had read an article on search engine land also about Meta keyword tag that was also fabulous.

What is keyword?

For users – Keywords are search term to find out the appropriate results in any search engines.

For SEO – Keywords are the topic of the web page to get higher ranking in any search engines by the targeted keywords.

Importance of Meta Keywords:

For users: Nothing. The user can’t see the tag on the web page.

For SEO: Everything. But now it is nothing because Google has declared its concept about it.

Importance of Keywords:

For users: Users always needs related information whatever he performed in search engines.

For SEO: It is everything but there is a proper way to utilize it. Yes, keyword is everything for an SEO but how to use it on a web page is the biggest aspect for any SEOs.

How to Use Keywords on Web Page:

Keyword research is the biggest chapter in SEO field. So, an SEO should know what the most searches keywords are. We as an SEO should recognize what the trends of keywords are. What is customer, what is product and in what geography we have to interfere are the other things about the keywords research.

Keyword is used in title tag. So, an SEO should recognize about the density of keywords in title tag. Title is quite different from keywords so, don’t be confused about the title and keywords.

Keywords have greater importance on the web page within content and within product, alt tag, header tag etc. so, you have to know the proper density of keywords within content. Right placement of keywords within the content is everything.

Overall, Meta keywords tag are nothing for web page ranking in search engines but keywords have the major factors for web page ranking in any search engines.

We already have discussed on various topics of Search Engine Optimization but still there are some more topics which are remained. In SEO, there are the biggest factors as On-page optimization and Off-page optimization. We already have discussed about those chapters. I need to explain some more basic chapters of SEO which is being ignored by many SEOs.

I have to deal Server Side Factors and some general topic of SEO. In Server side factors, the main topics are – 301 and headers status code.

Many times we face the problem. There is main problem with page redirection which is known as 301 URL directions also. There are big question on this topic. It should be redirect or remove? What is the purpose of redirection? Is redirection will work?

Yes, all these are right questions. From my point of view removal of URL and redirection of URL both have own importance. We should choose those URL to remove which have no visitors and nothing importance from search engine point of view. On the other hand, a page which has high PR or high visitors should be redirected. Redirection is not the last things. There is need of webmaster submission also. There is Google webmaster where all the redirection should be submitted to make known Google crawler about the redirection.

Another thing is Server status code. You should monitor your page server status code. What is it? It is 200 errors or 404 errors? In both situations you have to work on those.

Many times we face large page size also which make pages very slow to browse. So, proper page size should not be exceeded from 110 KB.

There are many browsers so; your page should be passed with each browser properly. All things should be appropriate in each browser.

Some other things are appropriate style sheet, appropriate templates and metadata should be checked, standard navigation, HTML and XML sitemaps and analytical code.

So, all these are basic things of SEO which should be passed properly through SEOs. These are helpful in crawling and ranking.

Off-Page Factors in Search Engine Optimization July 22, 2009

Off-page is the biggest factors in search engine optimization from beginning of search engines. It is known as link building or promotion of web pages also. Off-page factors got drastic position in the age of Google search engines. Google brought page rank and back link concept to get web pages in honorable status. It was the really a revolution in search engine optimization field.

For both – bank link creation and to get higher page rank, there is need of, link building. One more factor include in link building or off-page factor, that is – higher ranking from targeted keywords. It means – more back links, higher page rank and more relevant back, higher ranking in search engines by targeted keywords. Here the theory of link building changes again. In the recent times, links will be count as back link which are relevant and not crap. So, more back link is not possible now, if the link is not relevant. Now, again for higher ranking, relevancy is must in the link building era.

I have analyzed many times that people are confused in link building and relevant link building. They are confused about off-page factors. Again, here I want to make it clear that only link buildings are not off-page factors in SEO. Yes, off-page factors have broader aspect and sense. Basically, off-page is the promotional work whether it is online or off-line. So, any type of promotional work will be known as the activity of off-page, such as – link building, RSS Subscription, forums participation, social bookmaking, social promotion through social networking sites, blogging, directory submission, press releases, article submission, social participation, buzzing etc.

All these activities are effective only when, it is used in the context and naturally. For example – for social bookmaking home page URL submission is unethical. In the directory submission – deep link has no value. I have many examples which are unethical from the search engine point of view and they have no value as back links.

In off-page factors, using proper anchor text according to landing pages are the most valuable and important. People are crazy towards home page URL only but deep link’s back link creation should be minimum 25% in the context of home page URL.

Today, in search engine optimization industry, the question is very hot. How to get higher ranking in organic searches a site by targeted keywords? It is the basic question of this industry. We, as an SEO can’t guarantee of #1 position but we always try to reach on #1 if we are ethical.

Unethical practice can reach us on #1 but it can be temporarily not for permanent. We, as an SEO analysis, research and study of search engines algorithms and try to follow that. We know that no search engines give their algorithm but we try to know that like a doctor to see the ups and downs in this industry.

I have always said that to get higher ranking by targeted keywords is not a vast task but I say here this word in another way that it is not an easy task also. There is only one fact to get higher ranking – keywords research and placement of those keywords in right way on the web page.

If we work as an SEO on a web site then we should understand very clearly our work. Our work starts from URL research and navigation of URL properly. URL research and navigation of URL is the biggest work for a site.

If you understand difference between dynamic URL and static URL then you will get succeed soon. You have to put your dynamic URL within static pages.

If the work of URL is done by you then you should proceed with keywords research and placement of keywords within content, title and overall webpage in right way. This is the basic and final work as an SEO which will guarantee to get higher ranking of your web page in organic searches by targeted keywords.

In this way, we have to cross some technical works also like – use of h1, h2…h6, use of fresh and unique content related to the web theme, use of alt attribute, use of anchor text etc.

Nowadays, in the SEO industry there is big problem of unique and fresh content. There is another big problem of optimized page and optimized content. If we solve these basic problems then surly we will get any web page in higher position in organic searches by targeted keywords.

Many times, we have written about each and every factors of SEO. In my previous post I have written about search engine optimization and beginners guide for SEOs but here specially, I want to explore something different on the on-page factors which are the biggest challenge for SEOs.

Recently, I am facing big problem by URLs. After 3.5 years having worked in an online marketing company as an SEO now, I have joined in a new company which has never done SEO for its website. The website has been developed by developer and designers on contract basis. All the URL of the website (on which I am working) is in different languages like – .HTML, .ASP, .ASPX etc. Some URLs are browsing in pop-ups, some in JavaScript and some are in frames. URL structures are related to neither users’ point of view nor search engines.

During the work, I learnt about the proper structure of URL which is the biggest challenge for SEOs. Now, I think for a better site it is necessary to research and analysis of URL structure.

URL should be in proper naming conventions. Other problems are related to navigational structure. How to optimize a better navigation? It is the basic things to go through the 20 top sites with related industry. Better navigation structures derive – loyal visitors, returning visitors, increase leads and decrease bounce rate.

Title tags are the keys of websites. Unique and descriptive title and Meta tags related to the web page themes are also one of the biggest challenge for SEOs.

We have analysis and seen most of the sites are not including H1, H2 and H3 tags because they don’t know their importance. The tags tell the users and search engines, all the things are in proper and optimize way.

In most of the websites, there are same title and Meta tags with different URLs. Title tags in most of cases are not in a proper sentence. Most of the people include only keywords in title tags which look like spam and nothing else.

Some SEOs don’t know the uses of robots.txt also. The file tells the search engines what pages have to index and what not.

These are some on-page factors which are as challenge for SEOs. If we complete these works properly then most of the web pages can get higher ranking by their targeted keywords.

Content Factors in Search Engine Optimization April 20, 2009

In the search engine optimization content has greater importance for a web page than other things. Content is known as king for the web page. But what should be criteria of best content? Search engines always find better and unique information on the web page to guide in right direction to users.

For the better content there should be some criteria – content should be theme related, content should be unique, content should be fresh, content should be informative and content should be correct by grammar.

Now, on the web page content should be in optimized way. For the content optimization SEOs should analysis the theme of web page and content with related keywords. Keywords should be placed in right way within content. Keywords density within content should not be more than 5-7%. Duplicate content are not allowed for better ranking so, it should be avoid.

For the better ranking it is better to place content in the main body after H1. Scrappy content prevent whole web page so, before placing content all factor should be in mind. There should be standard of web page content, article content and blog content. Web page content should be fully grammatically correct, fresh, unique, informative and theme related.

If a web page offers well established content on the web page then there is no need to put Meta description or keywords but title should be unique and related to that content. Content and title two things can guarantee for better ranking of a web page in any search engines.

Web 2.0 from O’Reilly Media to Web 3.0 January 6, 2009

No doubt, we all know about Web 2.0 more deeply from O’Reilly Media group. A conference was held by the group in 2004 about the understanding of web. According to the writer Tim O’Reilly it was “a brainstorming session between O’Reilly and Medialive International.” Its origin was not in 2004 by the conference of web 2.0 but the clear aspect about the web came from the conference. In the starting of what is Web 2.0 Tim O’Reilly writes, “The bursting of the dot-com bubble in the fall of 2001 marked a turning point for the web.” It means the discussion about web was started from 2001 and dot-com bursting was the turning point.

From the 1997 to 2004 Google was a dominant search engine in the industry of search engines. Before it Netscape which was the starter of web era was out of market. This was the situation to theories all the software, data and tools the web. In my point of view web 2.0 is nothing but theory of development in web which was started from search engine Yahoo and completed to Google in the major role.

Now, in which era we live, there are many contradictions between web 2.0, web 3.0, web 4.0, and web 5.0 and so on. But main contradiction is between web 2.0 and web 3.0. I will let you what people think about all these.

At 1st I should clear about web 2.0 from the example of Tim O’Reilly writing which was published in “what is web 2.0”:

Major differences of web 1.0 to 2.0 are:

Personal Web site – Blogging

Page Views – Cost Per Click

Publishing – Participation

CMS – Wikis

Directories – Tagging

Stickiness – Syndication

There are some more example has been produced by Tim O’Reilly but I have shown here only most important are.

With the example you can justify the differences between web 1.0 and web 2.0. I think quantitative changes of web 1.0 starts towards web 2.0 from the age of search engines but the qualitative changes comes in light in 2004 after the conference of web 2.0.

In the tag line of “what is web 2.0” Tim O’Reilly writes, “Design Patterns and Business Models for the Next Generation of Software” is web 2.0.

In my point of view web 2.0 development should be identified in two terms – Software development and “The Web as Platform” as per the Tim O’Reilly.

Software development was basic aspect and quantitative changes in the web which reach over the web 2.0.

Basically in software development was:

Blogging
APIs
RSS
XML
AJAX
Tagging

These are the major development of software which bring the theory of web 2.0 and on the basis of them a theory comes which was for web 2.0 and web as platform.

When we say web as platform it means people collaboration on the web. In this process blogging, tagging and APIs played a great role.

It was the theory of people participation on the web to create a new business model on the web. Adsense and Adwords is the major theory of this.

In my point of view web 2.0 essence was content. Technological development and all things were for better web. People collaboration with the information about the things by the web. So, the content became king for the entire web in the era of web 2.0 with the participation on web.

In this way RSS played great role in distribution of content. It was the qualitative changes from the hyper link to content distribution.

Now, the debate is not for web 2.0, debate is for web 3.0. I think still it is not the stage of web that we can say, we are in the era of web 3.0 but people don’t control themselves and give some examples of web 3.0:

Focused on the individual
lifestream
Consolidating dynamic content
The semantic web
Widget, drag, drop mashup
User Behavior, me-onomy
iGoogle, Netvibes
User engagement
Advertisement

But in my point of view it is not the stage which we can define that we are in the age of web 3.0. There are some solid reasons:

There are not any technological and software development like web 2.0

There is not a solid theory like web 2.0 which was “The Web as Platform”.

No site seems on the theory of web 3.0.

But I can say the quantitative changes for web 3.0 are continued. Web 3.0 will be for the web however you are the outside of web.

Through the mobile phones – blogging, RSS and all the news update is the symptoms of web 3.0 but we can’t give a theory on the basis of only one or two technological development. The development of technology and software will soon give the theory of web 3.0 front of us but still I am not agree that web 3.0 is our era.

Search Engine Optimization Guide – SEO Basics December 1, 2008

Before proceeding about search engine optimization I think we should know about search engines and optimization. I think nowadays, every one knows about search engines. It is a web page to search specific information on the Internet by keywords or search term.

Basically, Search engine optimization not include with optimization of search engines, it includes the optimization of web pages or web sites.

In the search engine optimization guide nothing is secret. I want to let you about the process of optimization. Optimization includes with websites for the higher ranking in search engines. It is the process of improving traffic for web pages by targeted keywords in organic searches by modifying that pages and proper optimization.

Normally, we start from theory of optimization but I want to proceed from practices. For example – if we have a web site then what we think to do over that? What should be the stricture of the web site? What should be navigation of the web site? Etc.

From my point of view, I start from market and keyword research on the topic of web site. 1st thing in the optimization include research that should be related to market, product age, geography and keywords in terms of competition. After the research of keywords and market we should proceed with web page optimization by those keywords which are chosen by us by research for the targeted people by the targeted keywords.

Title tag is most important part of web site optimization. It appears on title bar. Title tag should be created with the list of keywords which you want to target for search. It should be short but descriptive and meaningful because it comes in search engines when a user performs that keyword which has been targeted by you for your web page.

Another thing with the title tag is specification. What is on your web page, tell the user by the title. It means you should be specific with web page. You should consider about the content which is on your web page and according to that content you should create title. Don’t use so many auxiliary verbs in title tag. For example – is, are, on, in etc.

After the title tag making you should proceed with description. Description of a website also most important part because it is placed in the searches by search engines with the title. The targeted keywords should appear in the Meta tag description. In my point of view, description is most benefited if the site has less content on the web page. Basically, it is important for e-commerce sites. Description improves the density of content also.

Keywords also could be included in the web page and it shows the web page search term. In my point of view, it has less important, so you can leave it.

After this we come to the web page structure. Web page structure should be like a book. All the navigation should be in hierarchy way where user could reach very easily. Here we can discuss about URL structure and page structure. At 1st we look into URL structure.

URL structure can be dynamic or static but some people rewrite dynamic URL to make that static. URL rewriting take some risk if that get any problem, will be treat as another page by search engines. Nowadays, Google read every URL but from the user point of view URL has also major role in traffic deriving. For example:

If you have a page of Sony Ericsson K790i and URL is: mysite.com/12345/=?158 then it will be considered as dynamic page and user will not attract like this page: mysite.com/mobile-phones/sony-ericsson-k790i. I think the example is enough to learn about URL structure.

Now, we should come on page structure. In my point of view page structure is page navigation. Page navigation tells users to know about your site content and pages. It should be in text with hyper link. It should be in proper navigation. If possible use breadcrumb navigation.

Now, go to the content. Content of your site should be unique and fresh. It means your site pages should offer something new for the users which is not on the web.

You must add heading in your site to navigate search engines hierarchy of site. H1 should be in top and should use at once. H2, H3…H6 should be use in proper way like a dictionary or book.

Image should also optimize. If you use an image in your site, it will attract the visitors but along with as an SEO you should care about alt tag of image that will tell the search engines about the image as well as users also in condition of unable to browse that.

In the SEO field we always discuss about Dofollow and Nofollow. Dofollow links allow the search engines follow and index. Dofollow links get the reputation and value of your PR while nofollow links don’t included by search engines and they don’t get your site reputation. Nofollow links always behave as a negative link. For example: If you are writing about a Spam link or site then you can use nofollow for that.

In the search engine optimization robots.txt file has also its major importance. It allows or disallows files to index or noindex by search engines. Basically, it is use for disallow the pages by search engines if your site give different pages for users with same content or product.

Many people think it is very hard subject in search engine optimization and they talk its in two ways – static and dynamic. Yes, it is true but I don’t think it is so hard subject. If you have a dynamic site and you want to block the pages then you simply can disallow that pages or folders which come after your index page. Like this, static page also can be disallowed by robots.txt file.

Lastly, we make an XML and HTML site map for the search engines and users. HTML sitemap tells the users to access easily all the pages of your site by sitemap. XML sitemap creation and submission in webmaster tools tell the Google about your all pages of site to cache them which are unable to reach to crawler. Major search engines Yahoo, Google and MSN offer webmaster tools to submit your sitemap.

It is the basic optimization process. In this process we can include to find out site errors also which is mostly known as 404 errors. If your site has multiple URL with same content you can redirect them also by 301.

As an SEO it is not easy task to make an effective title for a web page. Most of the SEOs are not able to write an effective title for a web page which may attract user. Title is not only for user point of view it is search engine point of view also if an SEO work on a web site.

SEO is slow process work and no one can guarantee for #1 but to achieve #1 position every SEOs have goal by targeted keywords. If you follow the guide lines of search engines, that are enough to get higher ranking in search engines. But the people who optimized the websites don’t think about guidelines and want to do whatever they have got experience from their practices.

Practices are right but always there are changes in search engines algorithms. So, to update yourself you have to know theory also.

Every search engines working for their relevancy as I have already written in my previous post of “Link Building Thesis”. Here I will prove that things. When you go to search engines to find out whatever you need, what is done by you? Yes, you type a keywords and search more relevant topic related to your queries. When you find that, you become satisfied but sometimes you don’t find that then what is done by you that time?

You have to work on this pace as an SEO. You have to work for relevancy like as search engines. If the page is related to “SEO” or “Web Design” then you should to work or make a title related to your “SEO” or “Web Design” services. It means if your SEO page offering SEO services then don’t make title like SEO article or SEO news.

To make effective title tag you should do:

Title should be relevant to content and page whatever the page offers

Title should be related to content as well as content should also related to title

Try to make title small

Try to include keywords more than 2 times in the title by which the page is being targeted

Try to make title with most searches keywords

Make it meaningful

Make it descriptive

Make it attractive

To make effective title tag you should don’t do:

Don’t make a very long title

Don’t use axillary verb many times in title

Don’t repeat single keywords more time in title

Way of making title tag:

1st you should research the market related to your product. You should search manually at least top 20 sites by targeted keywords whatever you want to target. After that you should analysis them title and make a unique, fresh and descriptive title for your title.

At last I will say always work for relevancy. On the page content also should be related to title and product. Every web page can’t be a brand name so make sure about your industry for brand name including.

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) Definitions October 30, 2008

SEO called as search engine optimization also. Basically, the theory comes with the age of web sites and search engines. When we say, it is search engine optimization it doesn’t mean that we optimize the search engines; it means we optimize a website for the search engines. If we go some deep then we can say we optimize the site on the guidelines of the search engines.

So, at first for the SEO definitions we have to know about search engines. Before the search engines there are existence of web sites, very clearly but the web sites known as URL not by the keywords. After the discover of search engines the web site popularity increased as keywords and then here SEO theory came in light.

The main differences after the search engines and before the search engines are “Key words” and “URL”. We can define in one line that before the search engines “URL” was in light and websites were very few. After the search engines “Key words” are in light and web sites density have very high that is why search engines optimization in needed. SEO is all about Keywords popularity and nothing but.

As an SEO if a person works on site, he surely think about keywords and keywords popularity. So, I can say Search engine optimization is the practice of web sites optimization on the basis of targeted keywords.

Now, we have to know about keywords. Keywords is a term to search the results in search engines. Search engines index all the sites by their keywords and give the results on the basis of key words.

So, here the theory produce that how a site can comes in #1 among millions of sites by the same key words. It is the basic theory of SEO.

Being a SEO we can guarantee that how a site can comes on #1 and what is the process of getting the positions.

I think this is the basic aspect of SEO and definitions of search engine optimization which deals the keywords popularity in search engines and among the people whether it includes in sites URL or sites Title.

SEO is the practice of organic searches and organic results.
